With Kindergartners,
I work the English language through short and funny stories in connection with
topics in which they can be interested in. Using this methodology, they learn
the new vocabulary in context and it is more enriching than learning isolated
words.
When I explain
the story, I use a big storybook with illustrations but the previous sessions before
reading the book, I teach my students the most important vocabulary of the book
using different tools and activities in order to make the plot easier to
understand.
Some types of
activities which I use to introduce vocabulary are the following:
- Flashcards
with pictures
- Puppets coming
out from a magic box
- Hide and seek
vocabulary for the classroom
- Guessing a word
giving clues
- Songs in
relation with the topic
- Memory games
- Roll dice
games
Below you can
see some resources and worksheets that I have prepared about the Go Away Big Green
Monster story.
Worksheet 1: Colour the Big Green Monster
Worksheet 2: Find the Big Green Monster
Worksheet 3: Count the body parts
Worksheet 4: Find a monster with...
Worksheet 2: Find the Big Green Monster
Worksheet 3: Count the body parts
Worksheet 4: Find a monster with...
The last
activity of each story is making a creative book so the students can have a
resource to help them to explain the story to their family and relatives.
